On 13 March 2025, people across the globe will unite for World Kidney Day under the theme “Are Your Kidneys OK? Detect Early, Protect Kidney Health.” At MRIKPA, we’re proud to be part of this annual movement that reminds millions of people to pay attention to their kidney health. Whether you’re living with kidney disease or simply want to protect your kidneys, World Kidney Day is your moment to act.
What is World Kidney Day?
World Kidney Day has been celebrated globally since 2006. Each year, it unites healthcare professionals, patients, charities, and the public around a shared message: kidney health matters. This year’s theme revisits a focus from 20 years ago, celebrating two decades of dedication to kidney health and emphasising early detection as a powerful tool for preventing and managing kidney disease.
The campaign slogan, “Are Your Kidneys OK?” is simple but profound. Many people don’t know they have kidney disease until it’s quite advanced. Early detection through simple blood and urine tests can change everything.
Why World Kidney Day matters for MRIKPA members
If you’re living with kidney disease, World Kidney Day is a chance to celebrate the care you receive and advocate for better support. If you’re at risk (due to diabetes, high blood pressure, or family history), it’s a reminder to get tested. And if you’re healthy, it’s an opportunity to protect your kidneys before problems develop.
In the UK alone, about 5,700 people need a kidney transplant, and 121 of those are children. Around 70,000 people currently receive kidney replacement therapy – dialysis or transplant. Many of these conditions could have been caught earlier and managed differently with prompt detection.
At MRIKPA, we believe in empowerment through knowledge. World Kidney Day is the perfect occasion to learn about your kidneys, understand your risk factors, and take action.
How MRIKPA members can get involved
World Kidney Day isn’t just a date on the calendar – it’s an invitation to participate. Here’s what you can do:
- Get tested: If you’re over 30 or have risk factors (diabetes, high blood pressure, family history of kidney disease), ask your GP for a simple blood and urine test.
- Share your story: Use the hashtag #AreYourKidneysOK on social media to raise awareness. Your lived experience matters.
- Join a park walk: MRIKPA’s casual park walks are open to all. They’re a gentle way to stay active while building community with others who understand kidney health.
- Educate others: Talk to family and friends about kidney health. Early detection saves lives and improves outcomes dramatically.
- Download resources: The World Kidney Day website has social media toolkits, graphics, and activity ideas ready to share.
